Modeling Saves Time, Money

Advanced 3-D modeling software tools for creating complex parts can save best-in-class manufacturers 99 days in time-to-market, as well as dramatically lowering product development costs, compared to average manufacturing performers, according to a recent study by market researcher Aberdeen Group Inc. (Boston).

Simulation tools employing 3-D models allow best-in-class manufacturers to pay $50,637 less in product-development costs than average performers, the study notes. Because virtual prototyping reveals design issues online, manufacturers using 3-D software typically require 1.4 fewer physical prototypes than average performers, according to Aber- " deen Group, and 6.1 fewer change orders than laggards, resulting in dramatic product-development time and cost savings.

Aberdeen's study, Transition from 2-D Drafting to 3-D Modeling Benchmark Report, quantifies the benefits of migrating to 3-D design software. The study also discusses the current pressures and challenges in the marketplace that make migration difficult. "To remain competitive, manufacturers migrating from 2-D drafting must maintain user productivity in the face of increasing demand for more products and more complex products and shorter time-to-market windows," notes Chad Jackson, the report's author and service director of Aberdeen's Product Innovation and Engineering practice. Best practices of bestin-class companies help them meet product development targets for revenues, costs, launch dates, and quality 84% or more of the time.
